Historic Plaquemine

Plaquemine was settled by the Bayou Goula Indians in 1699 and is one of the oldest cities in Louisiana, as well as one of the first three settlements in the state. Located in Iberville Parish, just minutes from downtown Baton Rouge, the Plaquemine community offers the charm and safety of small town living with the amenities of a larger metropolitan area at your fingertips.

With the Mississippi River to the east and scenic bayous and byways throughout, antebellum plantations such as Nottoway and landmark structures like the Plaquemine Lock allow you to savor the rich history of the area.  In addition, the community is nestled in the heart of the Atachafalya National Heritage Area with access to waterways for fishing, paddling and boating.

Plaquemine, while embracing its history and culture, is one of the most desirable and progressive cities in the south.  With much to offer not only to residents and businesses but visitors as well, our community is truly a wonderful place!
